I'm way behind on my blogging and Amanda won't let me have a beer until I write this so I'm going to make this brief!
This was the best day so far. After giving the bikes a once over after the day before's mud riding, we set off from Guamote with a hard 300m climb from 3100m up to 3400m our highest yet. Still pret
ty unfit and with the high altitude this took us most of the morning but it was worth it. From the peak there was a fantastic downhill from 3400m to the town of Alausi at 2400m over about 20ks. After the beautiful villages and farm land of the last 2 days this was completely different, the Andes on a much grander scale. Huge valleys, peaks and dramatic landscapes made for a fabulous ride.
After lunch in Alausi of soup, chicken and rice known as
almuerzo, we were faced with a vertical climb of 300m up a zigzag road. We were pretty tired from the morning's ride and when a nice man with a pick-up truck offered us a lift to the top we couldn't refuse! From there it was another beautiful downhill ride to Chunchi at 2200m along roads barely gripping to the sides of the mountains. The road took us to what seemed like the edge of the Andes and an inversion caused a beautiful sea of clouds below us for as far as we could see. We arrived in Chunchi at sunset and found a basic hotel where we crashed absolutely shattered after a dodgy chinese.
